New Zealand Sign Language Week
Te Wiki O Te Reo Turi
Every May, Deaf Aotearoa organises NZ Sign Langauge Week – a celebration of one the country’s official languages. Children at Kimihia are learning new karakia and lots of new sign language (NZSL).
A Few Tips For Sign Language
- Face the person and get their attention before speaking. Eye contact is very important.
- Facial expressions are important, having a plain face facial expression is like speaking with a monotonous voice. It’s boring!
- Hand position – is very important. You can look up videos for NZSL in the online dictionary at nzsl.vuw.ac.nz
- Which hand to use? Use your dominant hand - the hand you write with.
